Condolence quote

Link

"It is with deep grief that I learn of the death of your kind and brave Father; and, especially, that it is affecting your young heart beyond what is common in such cases. In this sad world of ours, sorrow comes to all; and, to the young, it comes with bitterest agony, because it takes them unawares. The older have learned to ever expect it. I am anxious to afford some alleviation of your present distress. Perfect relief is not possible, except with time. You can not now realize that you will ever feel better. Is not this so? And yet it is a mistake. You are sure to be happy again. To know this, which is certainly true, will make you some less miserable now. I have had experience enough to know what I say; and you need only to believe it, to feel better at once. The memory of your dear Father, instead of an agony, will yet be a sad sweet feeling in your heart, of a purer and holier sort than you have known before."

Trac

Trac

Trac is an enhanced wiki and issue tracking system for software development projects.

Trac uses a minimalistic approach to web-based software project management. Our mission; to help developers write great software while staying out of the way. Trac should impose as little as possible on a team’s established development process and policies.

All aspects of Trac have been designed with one single goal, to simplify tracking and communication of software issues, enhancements and monitoring overall progress.

What is Trac?

  • An integrated system for managing software projects
  • An enhanced wiki
  • A flexible web-based issue tracker
  • An interface to the Subversion revision control system

At the core of Trac lies an integrated wiki and issue/bug database. Using wiki markup, all objects managed by Trac can directly link to other issues/bug reports, code changesets, documentation and files.

Around the core lies other modules, providing additional features and tools to make software development more streamlined and effective. Our goal is to help programmers focus on the important stuff: Developing software.

Success tips from Vivek Paul- The Economic Times

Success tips from Vivek Paul- The Economic Times

At a personal level, I believe leadership is being able to play at all altitudes, making sure you stay hard-wired to reality. As a leader, one has to set goals, provide resources, create review mechanisms and reward performance.

However, at the other end of the spectrum, a leader is one who has to be capable and willing to play the role of an individual contributor — closing deals, doing analysis, etc.

And the leader has to be comfortable at every altitude in between, from setting information systems architecture, brand message, driving particular initiatives like quality systems or jumping in when needed.

Ten Emerging 2005 Software Trends

Manageability - Ten Emerging 2005 Software Trends

Only a hermit would not have noticed the massive, and I emphasize massive, developments in the Software development world in the first half of 2005. To get a handle on the most recent developments, I consult back to my original prediction as a frame for the picture.

1. Firefox Browser market share will continue to grow in 2005.

2. Eclipse marketshare will continue to grow.

3. AMD will continue to increase its performance dominance over Intel.

4. Javascript will regain dominance in the space of Rich Internet Applications (RIA).

5. Java developers will continue to abandon EJB as the standard way of building Java based server applications.

6. Semantic XHTML will continue to gain mind share as the best way to encode semantic information.

7. SOA will continue to mesmerize the masses... WS-* will move close to irrelevance

8. Large costly multi-cpu servers will be abandoned in favor of lots of cheap low cost single CPU servers.

9. IT Deflation will be the continuing trend. The kids are apparently shunning computer science education, and I've been making less money than I made back in 2000.

10. Scripting languages will become dominant in addressing the needs of situated software.

So, if you haven't been keeping up with the times, I do hope this 2005 refresher will get you up to speed.

Tom Peters on Presentation Excellence

Tom Peters has a nifty little slide show called 56 Ideas/Suggestions for Presentation Excellence. The content is great. The slides themselves are pretty weak. Ironically, he violates his own rules (e.g., “Only one point per slide”). Nevertheless, the content is great and well worth downloading.

GTD with Gmail Whitepaper

space-age wasteland

For everyone who asked, the whitepaper is here. Special thanks to Greg and Jonathan for looking it over for me and making suggestions. It’s still far from a perfectly complete guide to GTD with Gmail, so I guess any additions or ideas from this point can go into version 2 of the whitepaper or into the book (heh). Please distribute as you wish (just tell your friends to peep space-age wasteland). That’s all for now.

Google and Python

Link
"Python has been an important part of Google since the beginning, and remains so as the system grows and evolved. Today dozens of Google engineers use Python, and we're looking for more people with skils in this language"-- Peter Norvig, Director of Search Quality at Google

My view of Python in the workplace Python at eShop 1995 "What in the world is Python?" 1996 "This is great stuff." (MS acquired eShop in '96) Python at Microsoft 1996: "It's called what?" 1997: "You actually shipped Python code?" (MerchantServer 1.0) 1998: "Nice prototype. We'll rewrite it in the next version." And they did, in C++.
